Cancan: alive and kicking at Earls Court!

Truly back by popular demand, our Cancan girls will be performing every day the traditional French high-kicking dance on The Flavours of France Stage (see schedule for times).

Our Cancan girls are led by Christie, a professional dancer and choreographer who has appeared on stage all over the world, and in film and on television.  She has danced at the famous Moulin Rouge in Paris, and also featured in many of their worldwide tours.

The history of the Cancan is not as simple as you might think.  Its evolution, changing from a ballroom dance for couples in the early 1800s to the choreographed show we know today only really became standardised in the 1920s.  The word Cancan meant ‘tittle-tattle’ or ‘scandal’, as the dance was originally seen as very risqué.

The main dance moves of the Cancan are: the rond de jambe (circular movements of the lower leg with knee raised and skirt raised), the high kick or battement, the port d’armes (turning on one leg, while grasping the other leg), the cartwheel and the grand ecart (the flying or jump splits). The authentic quadrille is very demanding of its performers, each of whom must have superior qualities of balance, rhythm and stamina.

Make sure you arrive before the scheduled time of the performance as the Cancan show always draws a big crowd!
